FINE Facts
About FINE
FINE is a brand-led digital agency that builds businesses. Since 1994, we’ve been combining deep strategy with world class design to create compelling brands, websites, identity systems, and integrated marketing programs that help companies unlock their highest value. We don't just build destinations; we build the core reason people buy in.
To some, branding just means logos or clever ads. For us, it’s a deep process of building business value based on core human values. Brand-Led Business Building® is FINE's proprietary methodology that aligns your Vision (why you exist), your Operations (how your team delivers), your Expression (the story and details you show), and your Traction (the measurable impact on your bottom line). When those four things line up, you create brand integrity—and as we like to say, "Make a brand, and you've got it made."
We look at branding as a full spectrum, meaning we tackle everything from day-one positioning to long-term market traction. Our main wheelhouse:
- Brand Strategy & Creation: Strategic Insights, core brand foundations and operational platform building, and employer branding for recruitment and culture building.
- Identity & Expression: Naming, visual standards, messaging, and UX/UI design.
- Experience Design: Comprehensive discovery, concept, and environment development, service style and delivery, and complete customer journey with training systems.
- Website Design & Development: Everything from single-brand websites to flagship custom enterprise systems, and mult-isite architectures.
- Digital Marketing: Omnichannel strategy across owned, earned, and paid channels to generate traction.
FINE since 1994, navigating every market shift and digital wave from the early web to the AI era. You can find our human teams collaborating in our West Coast hubs—San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon—though we partner with ambitious brands all over the globe.
We thrive where experience matters most. Our deep expertise spans Hospitality & Travel, Technology & Startups, Financial Services and Private Equity, Wine & Spirits, B2B Professional Services, Real Estate, and Healthcare/Biotech. If your business relies on earning deep, lasting loyalty from your users rather than cheap transactional clicks, we’re built for you.
Yes, and yes. We meet brands at two major crossroads: Startup (where you are establishing a new market and need a foundational brand architecture to scale) and Evolution (where an established enterprise or Fortune 500 company needs to reinvent itself, streamline a complex ecosystem, or launch a flagship digital presence).
FINE is the current name we hang on the door, in combination with our “WeAreFINE.com” web domain. FINE’s official name is Fine Design Group, Inc., and we were also referred to as Fine Design in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But all along the way, FINE friends both internal and external refer to the agency as “FINE” so ultimately FINE became the working name.
Yes. Great brands need more and greater words than ever. From messaging and taxonomy, to search terms and compelling copy, you're only as good as your word. View our client work here: https://www.wearefine.com/branded-content-and-copywriting/
Our Approach
Successful brand strategy reveals the best reasons to buy, and more importantly, buy in. Great brand platforms are built on your company’s purpose, position, and promise, together with your distinctions, values and characteristics. They start with your “why” and establish your “only." Brand Strategy is a foundation to unify people, inside and out, as loyal participants in your distinct brand of awesome.
Thoughtful brand strategy leads to powerful brand expression. Behind these remarkable identities and messages is a vision for how to differentiate from competitors and connect with customers.
Art and intuition are crucial, but they shine brightest when backed by hard market data. We perform exhaustive audience profiling, competitive mapping, and user behavior analytics before a single design document is drawn. We build your brand framework on a foundation of verifiable truth so that your creative execution is as defensible as it is beautiful.
A brand identity project goes well beyond designing a logo—it creates a complete, recognizable system that consistently expresses who your brand is and why it matters. At FINE, that typically includes:
- Brand Architecture
Clarifying the structure of the brand—its components, relationships, and meanings—so everything that follows is intentional and aligned. - Visual Pathways
Exploring distinctive creative directions through visual, typographic, and experiential inspiration boards to define a unique look and feel and claim a position in your market space. - Brand Identity Development
Developing and presenting multiple identity concepts, including logos, wordmarks, typography, color systems, and imagery, shown in real-world applications. - Brand Expression & Visual Systems
Refining the chosen identity and designing core touchpoints—print, digital, environmental, and wayfinding applications—that bring the brand to life. - Guidelines & Stewardship
Finalizing clear, usable brand guidelines covering usage rules, typography, color, imagery, video, and more, with ongoing partnership to adapt and evolve the system over time.
The result is more than a logo, it’s a signature identity built to create recognition, consistency, and lasting impact wherever your brand appears.
An experience design project shapes how people feel at every moment they encounter your brand — before they arrive, while they're with you, and long after they've left. At FINE, that typically includes:
- Experience Mapping
Charting the full arc of the guest or customer journey, from first awareness through departure and return, to identify where the brand shows up strongest and where it falls short. - Experience Principles
Defining the core experiential pillars that give your brand its distinct character and the foundational commitments that shape every touchpoint, guide every decision, and ensure the experience stays true to brand intention as it grows and evolves. - Signature Moments
Defining the specific interactions, rituals, and sensory details that make your brand unmistakably itself. - Service Narrative & Tone
Translating brand values into the language, cadence, and behaviors of frontline service so every interaction feels intentional rather than scripted, and human rather than procedural. - Environmental Storytelling
Directing how space, material, light, scent, sound, and sequence work together to create a coherent atmosphere that communicates who you are without saying a word. - Touchpoint Design
Designing the physical and digital moments of contact. Think menus, welcome materials, signage, digital interfaces, packaging, and programming. When harnessed properly each one increases brand impact, immersion, and resonance. - Experience Standards & Playbooks
Capturing the intent, principles, and execution detail of the experience in a format teams can actually use — for training, onboarding, operations, and ongoing creative evolution.
The result is a brand that doesn't just look right but feels right.
The difference between a rebrand and a brand refresh comes down to the depth of change required. A rebrand is a fundamental shift—redefining strategy, clarifying purpose, repositioning in the market, and often rebuilding the identity system from the inside out to reflect who the company is becoming. It’s what’s called for when growth, mergers, strategy changes, or evolving audiences demand a new way of showing up in the world.
A brand refresh is more incremental, refining expression without rewriting the core truths—modernizing visual language, messaging, or experiences to better align perception with reality. Both are about forward momentum, but whether dramatic or gradual, FINE approaches each as a kind of brand transformation: methodically amplifying what makes a company remarkable today and removing anything that gets in the way of being clearly seen.
We approach it as your ultimate digital flagship destination. Every pixel, system architecture choice, and line of copy should look, feel, and function like your brand promise. We prioritize intuitive information architecture, premium bespoke visual aesthetics, blazing-fast performance, and robust technical scalable development.
Performance marketing is how brand strategy turns into momentum you can measure. It’s the coordinated use of data, creativity, and media to find the right people, earn their attention, prompt action, and keep them coming back—building loyalty and brand equity along the way. Rather than treating tactics in isolation, performance marketing works across paid, earned, and owned channels to amplify reach, efficiency, and impact.
FINE delivers performance marketing through fully integrated marketing plans grounded in clear KPIs, audience insight, and brand-led messaging. We develop campaign concepts, creative assets, and always-on programs that stay unmistakably on-brand while driving real results across paid search and social, organic search, content, email, and other channels. With ongoing measurement, optimization, and stewardship, we manage the details that matter—earning traction, generating efficient revenue, and reinforcing the brand at every touchpoint.
Performance marketing works best when it’s not treated as a separate lane, but as an extension of brand strategy in motion. At FINE, brand defines the why and performance marketing delivers the proof. Strategy sets the purpose, position, and promise; performance translates that clarity into paid, earned, and owned programs that find the right audiences, tell the right story, and drive measurable action.
Every campaign, message, and metric is designed to do two things at once: earn near-term traction and build long-term brand equity. This integration is even more powerful when it starts early. Incorporating performance tactics like SEO at the beginning of a redesign helps ensure new sites don’t just look better—they perform better.
That integration is what turns clicks into loyalists. With a cohesive plan grounded in insight, creative that stays unmistakably on-brand, and always-on channels optimized around real KPIs, performance becomes more than efficiency—it becomes stewardship. The result is marketing that doesn’t just chase transactions, but reinforces meaning, accelerates growth, and compounds value over time.

A brand is the sum of every interaction someone has with it. We create centralized brand playbooks and design systems that unite all touchpoints. Whether a customer meets you via a paid media ad, an internal employee handbook, an e-commerce checkout flow, or a social post, they experience the exact same brand energy and voice.
Every engagement is different, but the underlying approach holds. We start by listening hard. Workshops, stakeholder interviews, competitive analysis, and honest conversations about where a company actually is versus where it wants to be. Thirty years of doing this means we know what questions to ask, and we know what the answers usually mean.
From there, we work across whatever the project needs. Brand strategy and positioning, naming, identity systems, experience design, websites and applications, integrated marketing, or some combination. We've worked across enough industries, channels, and brand touchpoints to know how all the pieces connect, and where the real opportunities for differentiation tend to hide. Strategy informs creative, creative informs experience, experience informs how you go to market. It moves together because we keep it together.
Underlying all of it is our Brand-Led Business Building framework. Four things in alignment: Vision, the shared purpose that gives a company its direction; Operations, the internal culture and systems that have to actually live up to the brand promise; Expression, the story, identity, and details that make a brand recognizable and felt across every channel it touches; and Traction, the measurable impact on customers, employees, and the bottom line.
We don't disappear at launch. That's when a lot of the real work begins.
Honestly? Just call us. We're real people and we like talking to them. (415) 552-9300
Email works great too. For new projects, reach us at sales@wearefine.com.
And if you'd rather ease in, our contact form is right there waiting, no small talk required.
Aside from a few friendly studio dogs, FINE is made of actual humans. That's a deliberate choice.
We use AI tools across our workflow, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and GitHub Copilot, among others. These are genuinely powerful tools and we're not shy about using them where they earn their place.
But there's a meaningful difference between using AI as a force multiplier and outsourcing judgment to it. AI can surface patterns, generate options, and compress timelines. It can't develop a brand point of view, make a call about what a company should stand for, or know when something is technically correct but culturally wrong. That takes accumulated expertise, client understanding, and a kind of taste that doesn't live in a model's training data.
AI alone doesn't create soul, signal, or strategy. That takes human curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking. We handle the creative heavy lifting; the robots can help clear the brush.

FINE celebrates branding and digital project successes by comparing before-and-after data benchmarks in analytics tools (increases in traffic, brand awareness, sales, leads, and other KPIs); by garnering industry awards for our work; and most importantly by reaping the rewards of our collaborative relationships with the happy clients that we support.
We measure success by what we call Traction. This translates differently depending on your goals: it could be a massive lift in direct-booking revenue for a resort, elevated brand equity that secures a new funding round for a startup, or better recruiting retention driven by an overhauled employer brand. In the end, the profit you take is equal to the brand you make.

Clients tell us we're the rare agency that thinks like a business partner and acts like a person. They value that we challenge assumptions without being precious about it, skip the jargon, stay relentlessly reliable, and genuinely care about the humans behind the brief.
But the compliment we're most proud of? A lot of our clients have been with us for decades. In an industry that loves chasing the new, that kind of customer loyalty says more than any award.
While the best reward is our clients' growth, we do enjoy a bit of shiny hardware. FINE was recently named Top Agency at the WebAwards, alongside taking home Best Website Design Across Industries and numerous Best of Industry titles (including wins for Canyon Ranch, BRAND Napa Valley, and SERA Architecture. We’ve also been consistently recognized by the Communicator Awards, the w3 Awards, and the HSMAI Adrian Awards for exceptional digital hospitality design.
Many of our client partnerships span years, and some even stretch over a decade. Because our Brand-Led approach embeds us into the evolution of the business, we frequently stay on as strategic partners, supporting brands through subsequent growth phases, product rollouts, and ongoing digital marketing.
Our Technology
Future-proofing your digital presence with FINE isn’t about predicting every trend; it’s about building a brand-led system that can flex as everything else changes. It starts with a clear brand platform—purpose, position, promise, and “only-ness”—so your site, products, and campaigns all pull from the same story, no matter how channels, algorithms, or interfaces evolve.
From there, your website becomes the hub of a larger digital ecosystem, not a one-off redesign. That means thoughtful architecture, modular interface design, and an admin-friendly CMS or multi-site system that makes it easy to launch new pages, campaigns, or even entire microsites without reinventing the wheel each time. A strong identity system and content playbook keep visual and verbal expression consistent while still allowing room to experiment with new formats, aesthetics, and technologies.
On the technology side, future-proofing looks like fast, accessible, sustainably built sites that render beautifully across devices and are easy to extend, not fragile stacks that break when you add the next feature. It’s also about integrating performance marketing and organic search thinking into the foundation—so the way you structure content, design templates, and craft messaging naturally supports discoverability and ongoing campaigns rather than bolting them on later.
Finally, a future-ready digital presence is never “set it and forget it.” It pairs clear KPIs and analytics with ongoing optimization, content stewardship, and team enablement, so you can see what’s working, shift with fickle audiences, and keep refining the experience over time. FINE will build a digital ecosystem that’s rooted in strategy, designed for change, and set up to help your brand keep being “new again” whenever the market moves.
We build for stability, speed, and modern agility. Our tech stack is selected based on your unique needs—ranging from custom headless configurations and modern JavaScript frameworks (like React and Next.js) to enterprise content management systems, robust multi-site systems, and optimized e-commerce engines.
Driven by this commitment to flexibility, our agency developed and open-sourced Fae CMS. Born from decades of trench testing on world-class brand sites, this robust Ruby on Rails engine allows us to deploy completely customized, secure, and intuitive editing environments built entirely around your business workflows.
Absolutely. We construct complex digital destinations that go far beyond standard static marketing pages. We architect custom data models, build secure user portals, design bespoke client dashboards, and develop tailormade web applications that integrate smoothly with your enterprise technology ecosystems.
Yes. FINE architects web integrations that bring your platforms, tools, and data together—so your systems talk, your teams align, and your site actually works for your business. When choosing an agency for a website redesign, you’re not just buying a new interface—you’re choosing a partner to rethink how your brand shows up, performs, and grows online. Look for a team that begins with strategy, asking hard questions about your business, audience, and objectives before touching design or code. They should be fluent across brand, UX, content, and technology, capable of creating experiences that feel intuitive and distinctive while building systems that are fast, extensible, and easy to manage over time.
They should know how to protect what’s already working—brand equity, user flows, and especially organic traffic—while thoughtfully evolving the experience. Smart, early SEO integration should be baked into architecture, content, and code so the redesign preserves existing visibility and opens the door to even more qualified traffic.
They should wire in robust analytics from day one, so you can clearly track before-and-after KPIs, prove what’s working, and keep tuning the experience long after launch. They should also understand your sector, with relevant experience, proven case studies, and awards that demonstrate their ability to deliver results in contexts like yours.
FINE is uniquely qualified because we’ve been building on the web since the beginning—long before it was a template or a trend. With more than 10,000 projects completed over 30+ years for 400+ clients around the world, we bring rare perspective at the intersection of brand, design, and technology. Our award-winning work spans industries, platforms, and eras, but the throughline is consistent: thoughtful strategy, striking execution, and systems built to last. We don’t just redesign websites—we help companies build durable digital hubs that compound value and keep working long after launch day.
Accessibility and discoverability are baked into our development foundation, not tacked on at the end. We build with clean, semantic markup, optimized asset structures, and modern SEO schemas so search engines—and AI agents—can easily read your site. Simultaneously, we design and test against strict WCAG standards to ensure your digital home is inclusive, usable, and compliant for all humans.
The ideal relationship between marketing and IT is not a handoff—it’s a partnership built into the same system, working toward the same brand intent. From FINE’s point of view, brand experience breaks down when marketing defines the story and IT is left to “make it work” afterward (or vice versa).
The strongest outcomes happen when strategy, creative, and technology are integrated from the start, so what’s imagined is also what gets built—and performs exactly as intended. Brand promise and technical reality stay aligned. Messaging informs architecture.
Experience intent shapes systems and workflows. Design decisions account for data, performance, and scalability, while technology enables richer storytelling, personalization, and responsiveness. Teams can move faster, protect quality, and adapt as channels, tools, and customer expectations evolve.
FINE builds with integrated, in-house teams—brand strategists, designers, developers, information architects, copywriters, SEOs, and technologists working side by side. It eliminates friction, preserves intent, and turns marketing from a layer applied on top of technology into a lived experience powered by it. The result is brand integrity people can feel: cohesive, scalable experiences that work just as hard behind the scenes as they do in market.
