Friday is here again, and we are excited to head out on the water for some sailing adventures!
Sailing is an ancient art form dating back to 5000 B.C. This mode of transportation has been instrumental in the development of civilization, allowing humans to travel great distances for trade, transport, warfare, fishing, and exploration.
Sailing has grown from its roots as the dominant maritime tool of discovery to the now modern times of elite speed sailing as sport…or lazy weekend sailing many enjoy as a casual treat. Sailing for pleasure is becoming more common all over the world as smaller, personal and chartered vessels are becoming more available and more accessible.
Before Summer ends, we at FINE encourage you to get out and try it. Here are a few of our favorite spots close to the FINE cities:
Located on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City is an ideal location for propelling a boat with wind power. With its easy access to the Great Lakes and consistent westerly winds, TC supports a vibrant sailing culture.
The Grand Traverse Yacht Club hosts a Wednesday night racing series on West Bay each week for members. Hop aboard a vessel and enjoy the friendly competition.
For the more serious sailors, enter your boat in the world’s longest freshwater sailing race, the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac. First held in the summer of 1898, sailing enthusiasts race from the Chicago waterfront to historic Mackinac Island.
If a leisurely cruise is more your speed, experience West Grand Traverse Bay aboard the historic Tall Ship Manitou, or take in one of Traverse City’s famous sunsets aboard the Nauti Cat, both of which offer daily departures along the Traverse City waterfront.
San Francisco Bay is the super-highway of sailing. It’s seemingly intimidating to get involved in the community. But never fear – we gotchoo. Allow us to introduce the San Francisco Sailing Co. They are a lovely group of sailing enthusiasts who want everyone to love the open air and sea as much as they do. You can call them anytime and head out for a couple hours on a small or large sailboat any day of the week. Whether you want to cruise the Bay with a mimosa or check out the Sailing School, grab a few friends and get out there!
Another favorite group of sailors is the OCSC Sailing team. They focus on sailing education for all levels and interests. Their goal is to “inspire confidence”, which we respect oh-so-much.
If you’re interested in exploring the great Pacific Northwest, the wonderful crew at SailPDX will teach you anything you want or need to know about sailing the waters of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington.
For more adventurous sailing experiences, we recommend Portland Sailing Center. They offer multi-day large boat and salt water courses that fuse learning with doing. Every trip is different and provides true hands-on experience.
Over in the casual corner are the wonderful people of Columbia Gorge Racing Association. They provide the Community Sailing and Learn-to-Sail workshops for the Gorge community and welcome both kids and parents to come down to the water for “Open Sail Evenings”.
